How to Structure a Funny Story

I. Setup:

In the sleepy town of Whimsiville, where the sun always seemed to shine a little brighter and the ice cream truck had its own fan club, lived a pair of best friends — Barry, a clumsy but lovable aspiring magician, and his sharp-witted neighbor, Lisa, who secretly dreamed of being a professional juggler. Every Saturday, they would gather in Barry’s backyard, practicing tricks and routines despite the fact that Barry still believed “abracadabra” was a valid form of payment.

One crisp Saturday morning, as they set up for the town’s annual Fair of Fantastic Flair, Barry excitedly revealed his latest plan: a magic show to headline the event. “I’ll make a rabbit disappear!” he declared with the confidence of a magician who could barely shuffle a deck of cards. Lisa raised an eyebrow, “Barry, last week you made your own glasses disappear — into your mouth.”

II. Rising Action:

Determined to impress, Barry went all out. He borrowed a shiny top hat from the thrift-store and declared it “magical.” Little did he know, the hat had a mind of its own; it was the last remnants of a magician who had long since lost his touch — and his rabbits. When Barry tried to pull something out of the hat for the rehearsal, out popped a bewildered gopher, who clearly misplaced his entrance.

The gopher raced around, sowing chaos. “I think your audience is escaping!” Lisa shouted as she chased the little critter. In a panic, Barry tried to use his “magical” voice to charm the gopher into submission. “Stop running! Abracada-gopher!” Barry yelled, but instead, he tripped over a garden hose and face-planted onto the grass, causing the audience of squirrels to burst into what could only be understood as laughter.

Meanwhile, every attempt Barry made to get back at the gopher seemed to exacerbate the chaos. From pulling out endless string from the hat to mistakenly tossing Lisa’s juggling balls instead of a magic wand, it was a spectacular mess. People began to gather, drawn more by the ridiculousness than by any semblance of a show.

III. Climax:

Finally, it was showtime! Barry bravely stepped onto the makeshift stage, fully aware of his fading dignity. “Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be amazed!” he shouted, and instead of the rabbit, he reached into the hat and pulled out… the gopher!

The crowd roared with laughter, but rather than hiding, the gopher took center stage, somehow employing Barry’s magic skills to create chaos — juggling the juggling balls, dodging a confused Barry, and then somehow pulling out a bewildered cat from the same top hat. At that moment, Barry realized that the hat wasn’t magical; it was just a portal for pandemonium.

IV. Falling Action:

As the gopher and cat danced uncontrollably, Lisa leaped in to save the half-hearted magic show. She grabbed the balls and began juggling, telling a frantic Barry, “Get them back in the hat!” In a heroic move, Barry flung the hat at the cat who finally decided it was time to leave. And just like that, the show ended, not with Barry’s grand magical conclusion but with the cat hightailing it off the stage with the hat on its head.

V. Punchline/Resolution:

As the crowd cheered for the unexpected comedy, Barry took a deep breath and exclaimed, “Well, folks, I guess the real magic was… no, wait, there’s nothing magical about losing to a cat and a gopher!” The audience erupted in applause.

Lisa leaned in, grinning, “Next time, just make sure it’s less… critters and more kidders!” With that, Barry sighed, “Maybe I should stick to disappearing sandwiches. They’re a lot easier to manage!” And as the crowd laughed, Barry wondered whether there would be a career in interpretive gopher dance. The end!
